CRAZY - Gray - Artemis Fowl - টেনশন

CRAZY

I bought eight books today [Feb 1, 2017 - f. "goddess" "Sarawati" "puja" day; f. in f. "goddess" = famous etc.]:

1. An illustrated biography of "Swami" Vivekananda in English published by Rupa.

2. The latest hardbound edition of Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, edited by Margaret Something; Rs. 795; I bought this popular standard English dictionary to give as a wedding gift.

3. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (fascinating comic in color) in GRAPHIC NOVEL CLASSICS published by Arcturus; ISBN 978-1-78404-356-8; £4.99, I got it for Rs. 395.

4. THE RELUCTANT DAUGHTER by N. Jamir; ISBN 978-1-944171-92-6; Rs. 300.

5. Paulo Coelho: THE SPY, a novel, Translated from the Portuguese by Zoe Perry, Vintage / Penguin Random House India; Rs. 299. (I am sorry I could not type the double dot on e in Zoe.)

6. Mitch Albom [he is a fascinating writer - G]: "The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto" [about Me? - G], Sphere / Harper Collins; Rs. 350.

7. Jodi Picoult: SMALL GREAT THINGS, Copyright Jodi Picoult 2016; Hodder & Stoughton; Rs. 699.

[Seems to be a medical thriller by the sweet "hippy" Ms. Z, who is dying to know how I felt and feel about her and about the cowardly pair of "hippies" Y and Z who, unlike her, were too scared to dare to come near Me to inquire about the state of My physical and emotional condition after poisoning by the treacherous Ms. X years ago in Bombay/Mumbai... She reminds Me of God's wife Mary the Mother of Jesus, while the "hippie" Z reminds Me of crucified (and later revived) "Son of God" Jesus! - G]

8. J.D. Robb: APPRENTICE IN DEATH, Copyright 2016 by Nora Roberts; piatkus / Penguin Random House; Rs. 699.

Publisher's blurb: "Nora Roberts published her first novel using the pseudonym J.D. Robb in 1995, introducing to readers the tough as nails [?] but [?] emotionally damaged [?] homicide cop Eve Dallas and billionaire Irish rogue Roarke. ..."

Other interestingly named thrillers in the In death series besides "Apprentice in Death" by Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb:

I notice that except "Dallas to New York", all the other titles have the same ending: in Death.

Crazy.

Gray

Unlike Charlie and Adam, Gray never thought about pursuing women, and he made little effort, if any, in that direction. He moved obliviously in the art world, and like homing pigeons the women he wound up with found him, and always had. He was a magnet to what Adam referred to as psycho women, and Gray never disagreed. The women he went out with had always recently stopped taking their medication, or did so immediately after becoming involved with him. They had always been abused by their previous boyfriend or husband, who was still calling them, after throwing the woman in question out into the street. Gray never failed to rescue them, and even if they were unattractive or problematic for him, long before he slept with them, he offered them a place to live, "just for a few weeks till they got on their feet." And eventually, the feet they got on were his. He wound up cooking for them, housing them, taking care of them, finding doctors and therapists for them, putting them in rehab, or drying them out himself. He gave them money, leaving himself even more destitute than he had been before they met. He offered them a safe haven, kindness, and comfort. He did just about anything he had to, and that they needed, as long as they didn't have kids. Kids were the one thing that Gray couldn't deal with. They terrified him, and always had.

The women Gray got involved with didn't appear to be mean at first, and they claimed they didn't want to hurt him. They were disorganized, dysfunctional, more often than not hysterical, and their lives were a total mess. The affairs he had with them lasted anywhere from a month to a year. He got jobs for them, cleaned them up, introduced them to people who were helpful to them, and without fail, if they didn't wind up hospitalized or institutionalized somewhere, they left him for someone else. He had never had a desire to marry any of them, but he got used to them, and it disappointed him for a while when they moved on. He expected it. He was the ultimate caretaker, and like all devoted parents, he expected his chicks to fly the nest. Much to his amazement each time, their departures were almost always awkward and traumatic. They rarely left Gray's life with grace. They stole things from him, got into screaming fights that caused the neighbors to call the police, would have slashed his tires if he'd had a car, tossed his belongings out the window, or caused some kind of ruckus that turned out to be embarrassing or painful to him. They rarely if ever thanked him for the time, effort, money, and affection he had lavished on them. And in the end, it made it a blissful relief when they left. Unlike Adam and Charlie, Gray was never attracted to young girls. The women who appealed to him were usually somewhere in their forties, and always seriously deranged. He said he liked their vulnerability, and felt sorry for them. Adam had suggested he work for the Red Cross, or a crisis center, which would let him caretake to his heart's content, instead of turning his love life into a suicide hotline for the mentally ill and middle-aged.

"I can't help it," Gray said sheepishly. "I always figured that if I don't help them, no one else will."

"Yeah, right. You're lucky one of those wackos hasn't tried to kill you in your sleep." Over the years, one or two had tried, but fortunately, had failed. Gray had an overwhelming and irresistible need to save the world, and to rescue women in dire need. Eventually those needs always included someone other than Gray. Almost every one of the women he had dated had left him for another man. And after they left, another woman in a state of total disaster would turn up, and turn his life upside down again. It was a roller-coaster ride he had gotten used to over the years. He had never lived any other way.

P.S. I find it odd that Gray begins with G. (It would be an error to assume that My personal traits are necessarily identical with Gray's personal traits.)

BETTER WORLD BOOKS and ALIBRIS

I can feel the great happiness and joy of young female buyers I see on YouTube holding incredibly low-priced used books in very good condition which they recently purchased online from Alibris and Better World Books, fabulous international sellers of used books / second-hand books who have millions of used books in stock. Bless Alibris and Better World Books for selling books at affordable prices to male and female (!) book lovers worldwide (including Me, a bibliomaniac)!

Why do I sometimes put (!) after "females"? To show My affection for females? What a scandalous suggestion!

ARTEMIS FOWL

I wonder if Eve / Margaret / "Cynthia" / "Marian" [?] is the ghost-writer of the Artemis Fowl thriller series about 12-year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowler taking on the "fairies"/aliens.

WORLD PRESIDENT

God in human form is the de facto World President.

Enough is enough!

BIRTHDAY

Where I was born I have been told by people who were present at my birth. When I was born remains a matter of conjecture. I am told I was born in a tiny hamlet called Hadali, lost in the sand dunes of the Thar desert some thirty kilometres west of the river Jhelum and somewhat the same distance southward of the Khewra Salt Range. Hadali is now deep inside Pakistan. At the time I was born, my father, Sobha Singh, was away in Delhi with his father, Sujan Singh. When the news was sent to him, he did not bother to put it down in his diary. I was his second son. At that time records of births and deaths were not kept in our villages. Unlike Hindus who noted down the time of birth of their offspring so that their horoscopes could be cast, we Sikhs had no faith in astrology, and therefore attached no importance to the time and place of nativity. Several years later, when we had to fill a form for our admission to Modern School in Delhi, my father gave my elder brother's and my date of birth out of his imagination. Mine was put down as 2 February 1915. Years later, my grandmother told me that I was born in Badroo -- some time in August. I decided to fix it in the middle of the month, to 15 August 1915 and made myself a Leo. Thirty-two years later in 1947, 15 August became the birthday of independent India.

(From Khushwant Singh: "Truth, Love and a Little Malice: An Autobiography", VIKING in association with RAVI DAYAL Publisher and Penguin Books India.)

This is a very mysterious account. I wonder if My late Indian guru Khushwant Singh - (My American guru is/was Dr. Wilfred Funk; I am not sure if Dr. Wilfred Funk has or has not breathed his last, just as I am not sure if Professor Norman Lewis has or has not breathed his last; breathed his last is a less blunt term for "died") - was in fact one of the vast number of heavenly angels like Mary, Jesus, Eve, John et al (etc. is used for non-living things, et al is used for people, whether dead or alive, I guess).

BSF

Several years ago, by an Act of Parliament the Indian Army was replaced on the borders of India by corrupt BSF (Border Security Force) which is engaged in huge traffic of drugs across the Indian borders with Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc., on behalf of Indian politicians/aliens.

YouTube video of a burning girl in Madhya Pradesh

Yesterday, a bookshop owner showed Me a very scary YouTube video he had received on WhatsApp. (I don't use Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp; an elderly gentleman who is a neighbor/neighbour told Me today that he and his two daughters in the U.S. have regular video phone calls on WhatsApp at very low cost; he informed Me that Airtel is offering a sensational 10 GB for 28 days for ONLY about 450 rupees! Incredible! It is obvious that the incredible Jio 4G offer of free 1 GB per day has forced Airtel etc. to drastically reduce their Internet rates.) The shocking YouTube video, according to the young owner of the local bookstore who was visibly shocked, was a tragic video of a young Hindu girl who was being burned alive in Madhya Pradesh by a violent crowd of Hindus who looked like tribals and spoke a language I could not understand - but I think I did hear a sudden joyful shout of what sounded like "Jai Ho" in the video as she was burning - her alleged crime was that she had attended a Christian meeting. I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the YouTube horror video or for the accuracy of what the shocked young bookstore owner told Me.

Another YouTube video that shook Me profoundly a few days ago was that of about ten or more naked Naga sadhus with visible penises jumping into the water around a good-looking young Indian woman in a sari bathing in the same water but with her eyes tightly shut, it seemed - a degrading porn scene which should put all Indians to shame; perhaps the young good-looking Indian woman bathing imperturbably in the water with the naked Naga sadhus with dangling penises was a temple devdasi - temple prostitute - Indian temples have a long tradition of devdasis; devdasi = dev (god) + dasi (servant or slave). The porn video may have been made by a paid or honorary porn videographer, or perhaps by cyber hackers of videos from thousands of American, British, and European spy satellites that are hovering in the sky; I am SURE the YouTube PORN VIDEO would have BILLIONS OF HITS if the good-looking attractive young Indian female bathed NAKED in the same water with the naked Naga sadhus with hanging PENISES.
