MY ANTI-ACADEMIC ATTITUDE
My anti-academic attitude makes it difficult for me to take any pronouncement from the groves of academia seriously. I generally assume that the value of what a man says or writes varies in inverse ratio to the number of degrees he has got. And yet here is this person who has doctorates in Law and in Political Science, has obtained degrees in History and Economics, has studied at the universities of Innsbruck, Paris, Vienna and London, has held lectureships and professorships at Rutgers University, at the University of the Americas in Mexico City, the University of Puerto Rico, who has headed a research team for the Carnegie Institute, and who finished his official academic career at the University College of Aberystwyth – and in spite of all this he talks sense !
Mind you, he has always worn his learning so lightly that it is difficult to believe that he is an academic at all. He speaks – and writes – so amusingly that one’s first reaction to him is always laughter. I look upon his writings as some of the most important writings of our century, and yet I have never read one of his books without bursting out, many times, into laughter.
In England we call economics the dismal science, and I believe it is because of the advice of people who call themselves economists that the so-called Great Nations of the world are in such a dismal mess. And yet here was a professor of economics who not only talked sense but actually made people laugh!
The Breakdown of Nations was published in 1957. It was decades before its time. My belief is that it was pretty well ignored by Professor Kohr’s fellow practitioners of the Dismal Science. For one thing the ideas expressed in it were then quite new – and what person who has spent a lifetime mastering old ideas is suddenly going to listen to new ones? For another thing the author made you laugh. What serious academic is going to take seriously the arguments of anybody who makes you laugh?
Sixteen years after the publication of The Breakdown of Nations came that fine book Small is Beautiful, written by Professor Kohr’s great friend (and mine, I am proud to say) Fritz Schumacher, who always generously acknowledged the debt he owed to Leopold Kohr. Small is Beautiful swept the world, and its influence will, one day, actually permeate the thick skulls of those who rule that Great Nations – that is if they don’t blow themselves up first. No matter how thick their skulls are, presumably they are not thick enough to stop an atom bomb. These ideas are being accepted all over the world nowadays by people who are receptive to new ideas.
But when The Breakdown of Nations came out – just under a quarter of a century ago, remember – the ideas in it were completely original. There is a quotation in one of Professor Kohr’s later books, The Overdeveloped Nations, from the American psychologist William James, which describes the classic stages in the reception of a new theory. First the theory is attacked as absurd. Then it is admitted to be true but obvious and insignificant; finally it is seen to be so important that its former adversaries claim to have discovered it themselves. I image that Leopold Kohr’s central theory is at the second stage of development. I am longing for it to reach the third, for if it does not, and that pretty soon, I don’t have any confidence in the future of our species at all.
I brought myself up partly on the writings of H.G. Wells. In those days he was considered way out in front by we lefties, but a raving socialist lunatic by such people as my step-father. Wells was to be content with nothing less than one world state. He was the apostle of the Enormous. His great wish was to see Mankind ‘conquer nature’ and ‘turn it to his own uses’. This could only be done if the world had only one government – the Government of the world.
Well obviously, nothing could be much more dangerous than our present set-up of the world having effectively two governments, half of it being ruled by an old man in Washington and the other half by another old man in Moscow. The dangers of this are quite unacceptable, particularly when one considers the quality of the people thrown up by these two super-duper powers to rule themselves. Certainly there seems to be a Law (I wonder if Professor Kohr has missed it? I’m afraid he has not) that the quality of rulers varies in inverse ratio to the size of the mob they govern.
But a government of the world!
If one thing is obvious to me now it is that if there were such a government it would be despotism. It would be the biggest despotism that the world has ever seen. It would make Orwell’s 1984 look like a kiddies’ fairy tale. Give me Genghis Khan any day! Personally I wish to see no sovereign state bigger than the State of Salzburg. If the world ever achieves one government I want to get off.
After all, what is it that we individual human beings want from our societies? Leopold hammers this in his writings again and again and again. We want food and shelter, of course, but good food, not factory-processed rubbish – and good shelter. We want security from being bashed over the head by our neighbours. And, beyond this, we want what Leopold is constantly talking about: we want conviviality! we want good fellowship, we want culture, we want fun! Leopold’s books give us chapter and verse about this but really, do we have to name names of artists and names of countries? Surely anyone of us here knows perfectly well that the poets, composers and musicians, artists, philosophers and writers whose work still gives us the most pleasure nearly all come from what were small countries....
I come from a country which calls itself Great Britain. In what does its greatness consist? It termed itself great because its armies and its navies went about the world knocking other people about. There’s not much conviviality about that. Ah, but my true country – my England – that was great. In the days before its population reached eight figures, England produced Chaucer, Milton, Newton, Wren, and a thousand poets, prose writers, scientists in the true sense and people of other accomplishments of the very first and highest order. What has Great Britain produced? As an exercise can anybody here think of one Great British poet whose work will survive a thousand years? Shakespeare’s will, if the world does.
I don’t want to live in a Great country. I want to live in a civilized country, a convivial country, a free and a fun country! A country in which the people have very limited and simple physical needs but high, high spiritual aspirations. And artistic and intellectual aspirations too. I don’t want any country to be great in the sense of largeness. And I don’t want it to be rich either, or powerful, or – what all the great countries are in the world today – dangerous.

MURDER CASE ?
আমার সন্দেহ হয় যে অভিনেতা বিক্রম চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের বান্ধবী model/অভিনেত্রী late Sonika Singh Chauhan সঁনিকা সিং চৌহানের মৃত্যুটা খুন/murder case. আমার একমাত্র ভাই কিরীটি সিনহা মারা গিয়েছিল in a tragic road accident in Meghalaya in 2006 when the vehicle in which he was travelling from Guwahati to Silchar was CRUSHED by a heavy overloaded truck carrying timber which instantly killed My brother and an elderly uncle and some days later the driver (a poor cousin) whose bones were crushed died in Shillong Civil Hospital. When we received the news, we went to the hospital in Meghalaya where the dead bodies of My brother and uncle were kept in the hospital morgue for post mortem. The autopsy of the corpses was performed after I signed the papers permitting the autopsy as My late brother's relative and the dead bodies were later released from hospital after autopsy reports were given by the hospital. But I noticed very intriguing things about that accident which I have never made public before.
The most intriguing thing about the accident was something very strange that I noticed in the morgue when I observed the dead body of My well-dressed brother lying peacefully as if he was sleeping without a single scratch on his face or shirt or pants! - except that his tongue was jutting out of his mouth!
Very strange!... Obviously he was hit violently on the head by goons and murdered. And I am sure that AFTER HIS MURDER, My brother's vehicle was CRUSHED by the heavy overturned truck to make it APPEAR AS IF My brother got killed in an accident. (The dead uncle in the morgue also showed no signs of injury on his face and clothes - except that a bone of one leg was jutting out - obviously caused by goons hitting his leg violently. IF indeed My brother and uncle had died instantly - which is IMPOSSIBLE - then WHY did not My cousin the driver ALSO die instantly? - he must have fought hard with the goons who broke his bones but could not kill him in the short time available to the goons to carry out the murders - when we went to see My cousin the driver at midnight lying in Shillong Civil Hospital, he managed to whisper despite his agonizing pain: "I feel so terrible I could not save Dada [My brother who was obviously murdered by hired goons]."
NASA and Russian and European space satellites have precise and very detailed audio and video recordings of these murders by hired goons. These accurate audio and video recordings will be VERY USEFUL for violent retaliation.

What I find rather boring with GOD TV is that it generally does NOT broadcast LIVE shows but only broadcasts RECORDED shows which put Me off at once. I feel like quoting the poem in full but to Me it seems a childish though beautiful poem. The poem can be read by anyone who has today's copy of The Sentinel, published from Guwahati, or can be read online, I guess. I don't buy any daily newspapers anymore (I get all the news I need from Indian and foreign TV news channels) - EXCEPT the Sunday issues of The Assam Tribune and The Sentinel, both published from Guwahati, the capital of Assam, where I live.

I have never come across the surname Doifode before. Is the poet's first name Sandeep a male pen name of the poet who is actually a female? It is unusual for a male poet to express with feeling the deep amorous pain felt by a female, I think. If - as I suspect - the poet is a sensitive female, she may be someone like the mythological figure Meera pining away for her Elusive Target but in her modernized version not singing bhajans but indulging in crazy dancing and associated weightlifting. (Not being too fond of physical exercise Myself - I have read that the great scientist and lifelong bachelor Newton who lived to the ripe old age of 80 never exercised - I detest ignominious weightlifting Myself.) The poem is too long but it is written with sweet genuine feeling so I cannot resist the temptation of typing the poem for the convenience of My many readers:

Like Bhupen Hazarika, whose vast number of fans could not give him monetary help when he was seriously ill, yet turned out in several lakhs to pay their respectful homage to his dead body, setting a Limca record or some such record, similarly Manna Dey's dead body was not released for several days by a private nursing home until his family was finally able to pay the pending bill for several lakh rupees that had to be paid to the private nursing home, obviously the huge number of fans of Manna Dey were unable to collect the requisite money to release his dead body from the private nursing home.
